About

LeapOnline, LLC (LeapOnline) is an innovative online education provider to both NJ High Schools and the medical, government and non-profit settings. Curriculum is designed and implemented by Dana M. Pilla, M.A, Ed.M, K-12 certified teacher of Spanish, ESL and Supervisor.

In the High school environment, LeapOnline offers asynchronous and/or synchronous Spanish and Medical Spanish language courses with a total 120 hours to meet the NJ DOE graduation requirement. Curriculum follows the NJ Student Learning Standards for World Languages, utilizing themes from the model curriculum, and will span ACTFL proficiency guidelines from novice to pre-advanced in all strands.

LeapOnline offers adult learners, The Community Interpreter: Medical Interpreter Certificate Training Program. Community interpreting includes, medical, educational and social services interpreting. It is one of the fastest-growing professions in the world. Although the focus is on the medical, and government or nonprofit service settings, the need for such in various other settings is unending. This program offers:

40 hours of online synchronous and asynchronous instruction by a certified trainer.

  • The ACTFL OPIc Language Proficiency assessment certificate

Description of Courses 

All courses meet NJ DOE World Language requirements for high school graduation and total 120 hours of instructional time online.  All courses are co-hort (group) classes and are capped at 20 students.  Teachers all hold NJ State certification in Spanish. 120 hours of instruction.  

In all courses, the following global objectives will be integrated:

Students will be assessed based on:

  • Performance and defined as how well a learner uses language acquired in a classroom setting 
  • Proficiency, defined as the spontaneous use of language in real world situations that might occur when interacting with native speakers of the language or when immersed in a target language environment. 

The purpose of World Languages is to provide students with the essential language skills and cultural understandings in languages other than English, and many of the practices can be applied to daily life. These practices establish a strong link between communication and culture, which is applied when making connections and comparisons and in using language to function as part of local and global communities. 

All students will receive a transcript from Leap Academy University Charter School for the course which will include 4 marking period report cards, a midterm, a final exam, and a certificate of completion.  

Spanish 1 online 

  • This course assumes students have little or no background in the Spanish language.
  •  Aims to build language proficiency in the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes to the novice-high level, as defined by the ACTFL standards, by the end of the 120 hours of instruction. 
  • Students will communicate using memorized words that are memorized, some phrases that are practiced, and simple sentences when talking about very familiar topics related to self, family, friends, school, the community, and to talk about subject matter studied in other classes. 
  • Students will communicate mainly in the present tense and will focus on topics such as personal relationships, self -discovery, past-times, nutrition, the home, school and travel.  

Spanish 2 online

  • This course assumes students arrive with a novice high level of Spanish. 
  • 120 hours of language study or heritage language contact in the home environment 
  • Aims to build language proficiency in the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes to the intermediate-low level, as defined by the ACTFL standards, by the end of an additional 120 hours of instruction.
  •  Students will communicate using simple sentences to ask and answer questions, to handle simple transactions related to everyday life, and to talk about subject matter studied in other classes.
  •  Students will communicate mainly in the present and past tenses
  • Focus on topics such as childhood, memories, story-telling, world poverty, education systems, the human body, and social justice.
     

Medical Spanish 1 online

This course assumes students have little or no background in the Spanish language, and aims to build language proficiency in the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes to the novice-high level, as defined by the ACTFL standards, by the end of the 120 hours of instruction. 

  • Students will communicate using memorized words that are memorized, some phrases that are practiced, and simple sentences when talking about very familiar topics related to basic medical care in a clinical setting. 
  • Topics will include a basic family medicine patient intake form, basic CNA patient exam, nutrition education as it pertains to the My Plate model, the importance of vaccines and typical vaccine schedules around the world, and global practices and perspectives in medicine.

Medical Spanish 2 online

This course assumes students arrive with a novice high level of Spanish, with at least 120 hours of language study or heritage language contact in the home environment, and aims to build language proficiency in the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes to the intermediate-low level, as defined by the ACTFL standards, by the end of an additional 120 hours of instruction. 

  • Students will communicate using simple sentences to ask and answer questions related to clinical intake forms in internal medicine, radiology, pathology, phlebotomy and dentistry, to handle simple transactions related to daily practice in medical offices, and to talk about subject matter such as the human body systems, anatomy, common medical procedures, common adult and childhood illnesses, and medical issues that plague immigrant communities in the  USA and abroad. 
  • Students will communicate mainly in the present and past tenses, and will focus on local and global issues in medicine.

Medical Interpreting Certificate online

Co-hort model with a 30 student cap per class and is 40 hours
ACTFL OPIc language proficiency assessment administered during the course.

Intended for use in multiple settings, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to the profession of interpretation and is run as a co-hort (group) model, with a focus on asynchronous speaking.  

  • Emphasis is on medical, educational and social services interpreting, including legal interpreting. 
  • Course includes a sample code of ethics. While the approach taken targets spoken language interpreting, the course is also useful for sign language interpreters. 
  • The text is written in plain English and visually designed to make the content clear and easy to read, with visual aids to meet the needs of an international audience whose native language may not be English. 
  • Divided into five chapters, the book tackles the biggest challenges in the field today. 
  • The course will be taught in English and available to students with proficiency in any world language.  
  • Students will practice their interpreting skills at community partner organizations.  Students will take the ACTFL OPIc language proficiency exam during the course.
  • Upon successful completion of the final exam, students will earn a nationally recognized certificate as a Qualified Medical Interpreter or Bilingual Employee.

Courses for Hospitals and Medical Facilities

All non-English speaking patients have the legal right to free access to a qualified interpreter in a healthcare setting (Chen, Youdelman & Brooks, 2007).  This has left many medical facilities with very high costs in interpreting services, or has left patients without an interpreter.  According to a 2016 report by NPR, only a fraction of hospitals collect data on the language needs of their patients or language services needed.  At LeapOnline we believe in language equity and social justice in our community, Camden.  We strive to educate our local hospital bilingual employees in proper interpreting practices to best serve their patients in a clinical setting, and to meet the guidelines set forth by the federal government for patient health and safety.
